A moment in wine

It would appear that IE Law School Dean Javier de Cendra is passionate about everything he does. The same passion he showed in Maastricht when I filmed him talking about the role Europe still has to play in this world shines through as he talks about Chilean wine, with a special focus on the Viña Pérez Cruz label.

It looks like his passion for wine goes back a long way because when I asked him about when he had his first ever glass of wine he was very elusive…

I hope you enjoy finding out about this particular passion of his and about this fine Pérez Cruz wine.

Literally Jammy

IE University Law Professor Soledad Atienza has two passions – making marmalades and jams, and reading long books. Finding out how she combines these two passions is not only entertaining, it also fires the imagination, as well as being very instructive!!!

Prof. Atienza is just awesome to be around because she’s one of those people who makes your life easier without making a big deal of it and without wanting anything in return. Not quite what you’d expect of a lawyer, or of most people for that matter.

In this video she reveals that there is life beyond the law, no matter how important law is for everyone’s lives. Enjoy!!!

Only two days

Some say imagine how bad work is that they have to pay you to do it… But joking aside, the good news is that at times there are things you do at work, and people you meet, that you would anyway, just for the sheer pleasure of it. Shooting this video, and meeting IE Law School Intellectual Property Prof. Pedro Letai, was one of those times.

I don’t know how good a professor he is, but I heard his students love him, and I can also say I thoroughly enjoyed reading his poetry book “The Great Buffalo”. The book is in Spanish, but we’ve translated a couple of poems just to give you a taste. Expect more surprises in the video!
Prof. Letai is also a literary critic, columnist, and novelist. His first novel is coming out any day now. As a matter of fact the day of the shooting he was expecting his editor to send him the first copies, so I’ll keep you posted!

Europe

In ancient Greek mythology, Europa was a Phoenician princess who was abducted by Zeus after she assumed the form of a dazzling white bull, taking her away to the island of Crete where she gave birth to Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Sarpedon. Meanwhile, back in the 21st century, modern day Princess Europa appears to have been abducted in much the same way, but this time by a god called Crisis, aided and abetted by petty-minded critics and sheer schadenfreude, leaving her cast aside and forgotten in a far-flung corner of the world.

In this video IE Law School Dean, Javier de Cendra, defends Europa using some very convincing arguments. He touches on all the key issues – natural resources, the environment, the future of humankind – concluding that Europe as a whole has an important role to play in this world. He basically says that we have to stand up for our dreams and ideas.

The video was shot in Maastricht, the day Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, the oldest reigning Dutch monarch, abdicated the throne in favor of her son Crown-Prince Willem-Alexander. Maastricht was where Dean De Cendra studied, and also where he proposed to his wife. Go Europa!!!

The Fourth Man

When I went for a coffee with Arbitration and International Commercial Law Professor Justin Swinsick to get to know him a bit better and talk about what kind of video we could come up with together, he told me he was going to Vienna with an IE student team to attend an international law competition. The first thing that came into my head when he mentioned Vienna was the film “The Third man”, and when I suggested that as a theme for the video he answered right away that he loved Orson Wells, and that film in particular.

I don’t remember exactly how the title “The Fourth Man” occurred to me. Anyway, it was clear that we both wanted to render some sort of homage to the film, whose screen-play was the work of a writer we also enjoy and admire, namely Graham Green. I have to say that Prof. Swinsick gave an excellent performance, staying in character the whole time. I am sure that when he teaches, he is every bit as eloquent.

I really hope you enjoy watching this video as much as we did making it. Check out Prof. Swinsick’s intelligent insights into “The Fourth Man” as he talks about law and justice, and truth and love.
