New Horizons
Before we invented the radio, the telegraph and other navigation instruments, the distance to the visible horizon at sea was of extreme importance as it marked the maximum range of communication and vision. Today, we still use an aircraft control technique called attitude flying, whereby the pilot uses the visual relationship between the aircraft’s nose and the horizon to control the aircraft.
IE Business School Leadership and Management Prof. Erik Hiep is a horizon breaker, a traveler, and a Dutchman. He’s always asking you to broaden your mind, your limits, your horizons… Because new horizons will maximize your range of communication and vision, and will ultimately make you a better-rounded person!
P.S. Prof. Erik Hiep is the managing director of management consulting firm The Next Level, and has extensive consulting experience with international management teams and boards. He has worked on an extensive range of projects in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
A Secret Life
In this video IE University International Relations Prof. Mira Milosevic argues that people’s secret lives have exactly the same function as espionage in the field of international relations. Moreover, she says that everyone needs a secret life because it assures a certain level of protection.
In her view social networks make it extremely tempting to overshare our public and family lives, leaving us vulnerable.
Don t miss what she says about espionage and prostitution, citing what Vernon Walters, former Deputy Director of the CIA, once said to her!
Prof. Milosevic was born in Serbia, is extremely well read, conversant in several languages, and a very inspiring character, who of course likes to keep her secret life, secret!!!
P.S. She recommended a Croatian author you might want to check out – Dubravka Ugresic. I really like her work!
Red Cross
If you listen to IE Entrepreneurship Prof. Marcos Eguillor for a second, you’ll get the feeling that he’s only telling you a tiny bit of everything he has to tell. He teaches entrepreneurship, he’s an entrepreneur himself, and most importantly he has volunteered for the Red Cross since 1995.
In this video he takes the time to walk us through what he does when he’s on duty. You’ll also have the opportunity to see him in action. I don’t mind telling you I was really scared in the ambulance – these Red Cross guys drive like Formula 1 racers!!!
Serendipity
What immediately sprang to mind when I started writing about IE University International Relations Professor Waya Quiviger was exactly the same thing I thought when writing about IE’s globe-trotter Dean, Santiago Iniguez, namely the book “When the Going was Good” by Evelyn Waugh – because this lady has always been going somewhere.
Think about it – she has lived in ten countries, she is half French, half Filipino, she was born in Belgium, raised in the US and is currently living in Spain. Another true globe-trotter who is always on the go, just like Dean Iniguez.
She is extremely well read, hard-working, as well as being a really nice person, although I guess serendipity has also played a big role in her life… As you can see, she agreed to shoot the video even while pregnant.
P.S. IE School of International Relations Prof. Waya Quiviger holds a Master’s degree in Management from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) in Paris and a Master’s in Politics of the World Economy from the London School of Economics. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Business Administration at IE, specializing in social entrepreneurship. Prior to joining IE, she worked for the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland and managed a community of outstanding young leaders, many of them social entrepreneurs. She has also acted as a consultant to the Women’s Forum and the Club de Madrid.
Frontenis
Operations Management Prof. Felipe Quintana is one of those rare people who love frontenis. I say rare because being a tennis player myself, it’s hard for me to understand how anyone can like frontenis!!! Even more so when the person in question has been a tennis champion, as Prof. Quintana has… Well, he just says that he loves being able to smash the ball the way they do in frontenis!!!
Prof. Quintana is an industrial engineer with extensive corporate experience. He has worked for overseas companies such as LVMH and Robert Bosch and is currently working for Aguas Minerelas de Firgas (leader in the mineral water and soft drink sector in the Canary Islands).
Here Prof. Quintana draws some interesting comparisons between lean operations and frontenis. I can’t help saying that I would’ve preferred him to play tennis…! In any case, I have to admit that it’s great to watch him really smashing the ball with his racquet!!
